Many people think impact is the enemy of bone health. But in reality, your bones depend on it.

Every time you walk, climb a flight of stairs, play tennis, or go for a run, your skeleton experiences mechanical forces that help keep it strong. During our teens and twenties, these signals happen naturally with normal daily activities. We are often more active, spend more time outdoors, and are focused on getting our steps in.

Proper Footwear

Many of us walk in running shoes, shoes designed to minimize high impact, which is smart.  However, these types of shoes can significantly reduce the important micro-impact signals that are needed for proper metabolic function. It is better to walk in sandals or thin-soled footwear that allows for the transmission of low-impact signals.

As we age, these activities can fall by the wayside. At the same time, other lifestyles can begin to impede skeletal health. Things like jobs that keep us at our desks for extended periods. An injury we thought nothing of at one time that is now showing up as chronic pain. The natural aging process. Even weight loss, specifically calorie-restricted diets using new medication options, can cause decreased bone mineral density (BMD) and increase the risk of fractures.

The good news is that it is never too early, or too late, to start thinking about how to keep our skeletal system strong and healthy.

Should You Start Caring for Your Bones Early in Life?

Short answer: Absolutely.

One of the most important facts about the human skeleton is that it is living tissue. Bone is constantly being broken down and rebuilt in response to the demands placed upon it. Most people reach their peak bone mass by around age 30, making the years before and shortly afterward an important window for building a strong foundation. This is one reason researchers and healthcare professionals increasingly encourage a proactive, lifelong approach to skeletal health rather than reactive care when problems arise.

If you’re asking yourself, “How does age impact bone health?” The answer is surprisingly straightforward. As we age, the body's natural ability to replace bone tissue gradually slows. Hormonal changes, reduced physical activity, and certain medications can all influence this process.

The good news: decline is not inevitable. Our bodies will always benefit from continued movement and appropriate mechanical load.

How Impact Supports Bone Health

More than a century ago, German surgeon Julius Wolff observed that bone adapts to the loads placed upon it, a concept now widely known as Wolff's Law. Modern research has expanded on this principle, showing that mechanical loading acts as a biological signal that encourages bones to remodel and maintain their structure.

In simple terms, bone responds to use, or impact loading.

This is one reason many experts consider weight-bearing activities among the best exercises for bone health. Walking, resistance training, dancing, hiking, and other forms of impact can all help provide valuable loading signals.

The challenge is that not everyone can comfortably participate in higher-impact activities. Joint pain, mobility limitations, previous injuries, or concerns about falls may make those options less practical.

A 21st Century Approach to Bone Health and Skeletal Longevity

At Juvent, we believe healthy aging means supporting the body's natural systems.

The Juvent Micro-Impact Platform® was developed on the premise that the body recognizes gentle mechanical signals, which means providing it with the kinds of physical cues it evolved to respond to. Rather than relying on strenuous activity, the patented Juvent platform delivers low-magnitude, high-frequency mechanical stimulation designed to mimic some of the natural signals associated with everyday movements such as walking, climbing stairs, or resistance training.

This approach is rooted in decades of research into mechanobiology, the study of how physical forces influence living tissues. Scientists have long recognized that cells respond not only to chemistry but also to mechanical cues from their environment.

As a Class I exercise and rehabilitation device, the Juvent Micro-Impact Platform is designed to complement an active lifestyle and healthy habits. A leader in regenerative rehabilitation, Juvent provides safe and practical solutions to support bone health and skeletal longevity.

Healthy Bones, Healthy Living

Strong skeletal health is foundational to the way we move day to day. Balance, coordination, posture, muscle function, and the confidence that we won’t fall or sustain a fracture all work together to help us stay active and independent.

Both movement and a healthy diet with adequate calcium and vitamin D intake are important for lifelong strength and wellness. If you’re concerned your diet may be lacking in these areas, a well-chosen supplement for bone health can fill in any gaps.

Technology can also play a role. If you’re looking for ways to stay active without putting excessive strain on your joints, incorporating the Juvent Micro-Impact Platform provides the mechanical stimulation bones need.

So the question is not whether we should pay attention to our bones, but instead, whether they’re getting the impact they need to thrive. To remain dense and strong, the skeleton relies on mechanical stress and strain; without enough stimulation, bones will naturally weaken.

It is never too early, or too late, to commit to a healthy and active future—one where you age with power and resilience.
