Why Bone Density Tests Are Important

Also known as bone densitometry or DXA scans (dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry), bone density tests are non-invasive procedures used to assess the health and overall strength of your bones. They work by measuring the amount of minerals - primarily calcium - in your bones, and they are best used for detecting bone loss conditions like osteoporosis and fractures.

Osteoporosis is a brittle bone condition that makes the skeletal system more susceptible to fractures. Typically seen in seniors and postmenopausal women, the risk of fractures can be evaluated by a bone density test. This then results in preventative measures being taken to avoid painful issues down the road. This type of test can also monitor the healing process and determine whether or not the current treatment plan is working properly. 

Understanding Bone Density Test Results1

When you undergo a bone density test, the results are usually reported as a T-score and a Z-score. The younger you get a DXA scan, the better, as it can act as a reference score as you age.

T-score: This numerical rating compares your bone density to that of a healthy 30-year-old adult of the same sex. If the T-score is at -1 or higher, it is considered normal. On the other hand, a T-score of -1.1 to -2.5 indicates osteopenia or low bone density. Anything lower than a -2.5 is indicative of osteoporosis. 

Z-score: The second numerical rating will compare your bone density to that of someone in your age, sex, and body size. It is designed to assist with identifying factors other than age that might be impacting the health of your bones.
