For more than two decades the scientists behind Juvent, a medical-device maker in Somerset, have been developing a nondrug treatment for osteoporosis. The disease, marked by fragile and easily broken bones, afflicts more than 10 million Americans - about one third of whom can't tolerate drugs for the condition.
A recent study has shown that a one year treatment of low-level, high frequency vertical vibrations can inhibit bone loss in the hip and spine. The study was conducted on a group of women who were three to eight years post menopause.
This 2005 survey, carried out for IOF by IPSOS Health, aimed to understand the reasons why women with osteoporosis do not stay on treatment. It showed that 34 per cent of women interviewed either didn’t know what the benefits of their medication were or wrongly thought there were no benefits at all.
Mr Moroney headed for the States after attending the Christian Brothers in Dungarvan and in the intervening three decades has had a career in banking, corporate advice (mainly to healthcare companies), and is now chief executive of medical device company Juvent.
In the U.S., the Juvent 1000 device is considered investigational for the treatment of osteoporosis or improvement/maintenance of bone mineral density (BMD).
